India and Nigeria share a long and trusted relationship that continues to grow across business, trade and people-to-people ties. Speaking exclusively to Weekend Trust, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri G. Balasubramanian, said the partnership dates back to 1958, two years before Nigeria gained independence, underlining the importance India has always placed on Africa’s largest economy.

He described the relationship as “fantastic”, noting that both countries are multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual societies with large populations. These similarities, he said, help India and Nigeria understand each other better and work closely on shared priorities.

  • Economic cooperation is a key pillar of the relationship

  • Indian companies are increasingly viewing Nigeria as a fertile ground for investment due to its large market, entrepreneurial spirit and growing demand across sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, healthcare and services

  • According to the High Commissioner, Indian businesses have found Nigeria to be a welcoming and opportunity-rich environment, while also contributing to local jobs and skills development

People-to-people connections further strengthen bilateral ties. Around 50,000 Indians live and work across Nigeria, with major concentrations in Lagos, Abuja and Kano, as well as in several other states. At the same time, many Nigerians travel to India for higher education, professional opportunities and medical treatment, creating strong cultural and social bonds between the two nations.

On the global stage, India has actively supported Nigeria’s growing international role. During India’s G20 presidency, Nigeria was invited as a guest country for the first time, reflecting the confidence and trust between the two partners. This engagement later contributed to Nigeria joining the G20 as a permanent member, enhancing its voice in global economic discussions.
