Patients of HMPV should stay hydrated, experts emphasize, as India sees a rise in cases
India has reported more than 15 cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) this season, with cases detected across multiple states. Puducherry has reported three cases, while Gujarat recorded five. Assam confirmed its first case of the season on Monday, reported livemint.com.
HMPV infections rise across India as experts stress on preventive measures and symptomatic care
The increase in HMPV reports globally is linked to advancements in detection methods, according to China’s National Health Commission. Wang Liping, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, highlighted that HMPV has been present for decades. While northern China reports a decline in infections, the country remains in close contact with the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding respiratory diseases, including HMPV.
-
HMPV symptoms often resemble other viral infections such as influenza and flu
-
Common symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, and body aches
Despite the rise in cases, health experts note that specific HMPV tests are unnecessary as no targeted treatment exists. Doctors focus on managing symptoms with over-the-counter medications, inhalers, and other supportive care.
To prevent HMPV infections, the World Health Organization recommends wearing masks, regular handwashing, and maintaining a balanced diet. These precautions, alongside hydration and symptomatic care, remain critical in managing the outbreak.
