High Commissioner Santosh Jha visits Central Province, reaffirms multi-sectoral aid under landmark grant
India’s commitment to supporting Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions continues with renewed momentum, as Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha visited the Central Province to oversee ongoing projects and distribute essential supplies, reported tribuneindia.com.
According to a post by the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka on social media platform X, the High Commissioner interacted with beneficiaries of the housing initiative, which aims to uplift the living standards of Tamil plantation workers through multi-sectoral assistance.
During his visit, Jha reviewed the Indian Housing Project Phase III at Elkaduwa Estate in Matale district, while also handing over medical equipment and raincoats to estate workers and their families.
Under Phases III and IV of the Indian Housing Project, a total of 14,000 houses are being constructed in the plantation regions, with 25 already completed at the Elkaduwa Estate. The project is part of a broader commitment to improve housing, healthcare, and education for the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka.
High Commissioner Jha emphasized India’s dedication to seeing these projects through with the active cooperation of the Sri Lankan government. He also expressed hope for initiating new projects under the Rs 750 million grant assistance announced in 2023, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka.
