India seeks clarity on welfare of its citizens after US seizes Russian-flagged tanker in Atlantic

  • Against the backdrop of these unfolding events, India’s priority remains the welfare and safe return of its citizens, while navigating the complex diplomatic landscape shaped by sanctions enforcement and international maritime norms

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is actively seeking verified information regarding Indian nationals reportedly onboard a Russian-flagged oil tanker that was seized by United States forces in the North Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, known as the Marinera (formerly Bella 1), was intercepted after a prolonged pursuit that began near Venezuelan waters as part of an intensified US effort to enforce sanctions on oil shipments linked to Venezuela and other sanctioned entities.

According to international reports, the Marinera had a multinational crew of 28, which included three Indian citizens alongside Ukrainian, Georgian and Russian crew members. The MEA has acknowledged these reports and said it is “ascertaining details” about the status of the Indian nationals reportedly aboard the vessel. India’s embassy in Caracas is in touch with the Indian community and is closely monitoring developments to ensure their safety and well-being.

  • The MEA emphasized that assistance will be provided through appropriate channels once accurate details are confirmed, and that New Delhi is engaging with relevant authorities on the matter

  • There has been no official confirmation yet on the condition or immediate situation of the Indian crew members; the focus remains on gathering reliable information and consular outreach to protect their interests

The seizure of the Marinera has become a flashpoint in broader maritime and geopolitical tensions. The United States military, supported by the Coast Guard, tracked the vessel for more than two weeks from the Caribbean to the North Atlantic before boarding and seizing it under a federal court warrant. Washington says the operation formed part of its campaign to disrupt “shadow fleet” tankers that allegedly violate US sanctions by transporting oil on behalf of Venezuela and other sanctioned actors.

Russia has condemned the US action, labeling it a breach of international maritime law and demanding the humane treatment of all detained crew members. Moscow also asserts that no country has the right to use force against a vessel operating under another state’s jurisdiction on the high seas, according to statements from Russian authorities.
