India has dispatched over 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar, which was struck by multiple earthquakes, resulting in at least 144 deaths and over 700 injuries. The relief aid includes tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets, and essential medicines such as paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages, according to sources cited by ANI, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

India’s Support Amid Crisis

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is closely monitoring the situation, confirming that no Indian nationals have been reported injured so far. Additionally, the Indian Embassy in Thailand is coordinating with authorities after earthquake tremors were felt in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand.

“So far, no untoward incident involving any Indian citizen has been reported. In case of any emergency, Indian nationals in Thailand are advised to contact the emergency helpline,” the embassy stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Myanmar’s Earthquake Vulnerability

Myanmar experienced six earthquakes on Friday, as recorded by the National Center for Seismology. The country sits in a highly earthquake-prone zone due to the collision of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates. Despite this, Myanmar has not yet developed an official national seismic hazard map.

Data from the International Seismological Centre indicates that from 1990 to 2019, Myanmar and surrounding regions experienced approximately 140 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher annually. This highlights the region’s susceptibility to both major earthquakes and potential tsunamis along its extensive coastline.
