India has reacted sharply to the brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu minority leader from Bangladesh, calling it yet another grim instance in a “pattern of systematic persecution” targeting Hindus under the country’s interim government. Roy, who was the vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was abducted and murdered in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila, sparking outrage both in India and among global human rights groups, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the incident on social media, stating: “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity.” Jaiswal further urged the Bangladeshi authorities to uphold their responsibility in safeguarding minority rights without delay or excuse.

The murder of Hindu leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy has reignited global concerns over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, as India demands immediate action and accountability

Roy, 58, was reportedly at his home when he received a suspicious call around 4:30 pm, believed to be from the perpetrators confirming his presence. Within 30 minutes, four men on two motorcycles abducted him. According to reports, he was assaulted in Narabari village and later dumped, unconscious, outside his home. Despite efforts by family and locals to save him, he was declared dead at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.

Local authorities, including the officer-in-charge of Biral police station Abdus Sabur, confirmed that preparations are underway to register a case and that investigations are ongoing to track down the culprits.

The murder has intensified international attention on the recurring violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Human rights organizations and diaspora communities continue to press for stronger protective measures and justice for victims like Roy, who symbolize the growing vulnerability of minorities in the region.
