Indian government condemns use of force urges adherence to humanitarian principles
An incident involving firing by the Sri Lankan Navy during the apprehension of 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island was reported early this morning.
Two fishermen sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Jaffna Teaching Hospital while three others suffered minor injuries and have been treated. Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna have visited the injured fishermen and are providing all possible assistance.
India demands strict adherence to agreements on fishermen’s safety
The Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs where India lodged a strong protest over the incident.
Simultaneously the Indian High Commission in Colombo has raised concerns with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Government of India has consistently stressed the importance of addressing fishermen-related issues through humane and humanitarian measures.
India firmly asserts that the use of force is unacceptable under any circumstances and urges Sri Lanka to strictly adhere to existing bilateral agreements on this matter.
