In a recent parliamentary session, Deepak Prakash, a member of the Indian Parliament, raised crucial questions regarding the major development projects supported by India in other countries. V. Muraleedharan, the Minister of State for External Affairs, took the floor to address the queries, shedding light on the ambitious plans of the government in the realm of passport services.
The specific inquiry by Deepak Prakash sought information on the details of the number of Passport Seva Kendras functioning across the country, including the State of Jharkhand.
In response, Minister Muraleedharan provided a comprehensive overview, revealing that there are currently 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and 434 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) operational under 37 Regional Passport Offices (RPOs) nationwide. Remarkably, the State of Jharkhand hosts 1 PSK and 15 POPSKs.
Commenting on whether the government proposes to introduce chip-based e-passports in place of paper passports within the country; and
confirming a significant stride in passport technology, the Minister asserted that the Government indeed plans to roll out chip-based e-passports.
Elaborating on the forthcoming innovation, Minister Muraleedharan explained that the chip-based e-passport will be a revolutionary blend of paper and electronic elements. The passport will feature an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna in the back cover. Critical information will be both printed on the data page and securely stored in the chip, adhering to specifications outlined in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) document 9303.
This announcement signals India’s commitment to adopting state-of-the-art technology in enhancing passport security and efficiency. As the nation gears up to embrace chip-based e-Passports, citizens can anticipate a seamless and advanced travel documentation experience.
