India has launched a revamped e-Migrate portal and mobile app, enhancing the ease, safety, and transparency of labour mobility for Indian workers seeking employment abroad. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, introduced the platform, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the welfare of Indian workers overseas.
Jaishankar noted that the portal reflects the Modi administration’s focus on people-centric governance and improving the ease of living for Indian citizens abroad. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier release of a postal stamp promoting safe migration under the motto “Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen” (Go Safe, Go Well-Trained), saying that the upgraded platform embodies this principle.
The introduction of digital payment services in collaboration with the State Bank of India, with zero transaction fees, further enhances the platform’s utility. Additionally, the government aims to extend social security benefits, including insurance coverage, to emigrants
The enhanced e-Migrate portal aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 10, which aims for orderly and responsible migration. The platform offers a 24/7 multilingual helpline and a feedback mechanism, ensuring swift resolution of issues faced by workers, particularly those in the Gulf region. Jaishankar underscored the government’s responsibility to safeguard workers in foreign countries, especially in light of their vulnerabilities.
Highlighting the global demand for skilled labour, Jaishankar also stressed India’s proactive efforts in negotiating mobility agreements with other nations since 2015. The revamped system integrates with Digilocker, allowing for secure and paperless submission of essential documents. Through a partnership with Common Service Centres (CSCs), immigration services will be made more accessible to rural areas, available in local languages.
