Sixteen Indians serving in Russian military declared missing amid calls for their safe return
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed on Friday that 16 Indian nationals serving in the Russian military have been declared missing by Russia. This disclosure comes amid growing concerns over the safety and whereabouts of Indians enlisted in foreign armed forces, reported dailypioneer.com.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, a total of 126 Indians have been involved with the Russian Army. Of these, 96 have returned to India after being discharged, while 12 have lost their lives during their service.
India presses Russia to expedite the repatriation of 18 Indians still in the Russian military, including 16 whose whereabouts remain unknown
Among the 18 Indian nationals still enlisted in the Russian military, Russia has classified 16 as missing. The Indian government is actively engaging with Russian authorities to ensure their swift release and safe repatriation.
“We are seeking an early release and repatriation of those who remain,” Jaiswal stated, emphasizing India’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad.
The MEA is also addressing the broader concerns surrounding Indians serving in foreign militaries. This incident has brought renewed focus to the challenges of monitoring and supporting citizens involved in such roles overseas.
India continues its diplomatic efforts to bring closure to the families of those missing and ensure the safety of all its nationals engaged in military service abroad.
