India has raised serious concerns regarding recent attacks and thefts during the ongoing Durga Puja festival in Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the incidents, including an attack on a Puja mandap in Dhaka’s Tanti Bazar and a theft at the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira, calling the events “deplorable.”

  • One of the thefts involved the loss of a handcrafted golden crown, a gift from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was stolen from the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple.

  • The temple, located in southwestern Bangladesh, is a revered site for worshippers. In response to the rising tension, Bangladeshi authorities have acted swiftly, arresting at least 17 individuals in connection with around 35 violent incidents related to Durga Puja celebrations

Randhir Jaiswal, MEA spokesperson, emphasized these incidents could be part of a “systematic pattern of desecration” targeting Hindu temples and deities. He urged the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of minority communities and their places of worship, especially during religious festivals.
