Washington: US President Joe Biden has announced the nomination of Indian-American judge Sanket Bulsara to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, reported indiatoday.in.

Bulsara (46), currently serving as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York since 2017, is an expert in securities, contracts, bankruptcy and regulatory matters.

Born in the Bronx before moving to New Rochelle and later Edgemont, New York. Bulsara’s parents immigrated over 50 years ago. His father worked as an engineer for the City of New York, while his mother served as a nurse.

The White House highlighted his qualifications and described Bulsara as “extraordinarily qualified, experienced, and devoted to the rule of law and the Constitution”.

Sanket Bulsara has served previously as the Acting General Counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission since 2015. He has also worked at esteemed law firms such as Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP.

As a magistrate judge, he has presided over 400 settlement conferences, and several bench and jury trials, and authored over 300 published opinions, according to the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Sanket Bulsara earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Arts (AB) from Harvard College with honours.

Senator Charles Schumer, the majority leader of the US Senate, lauded Bulsara’s nomination, calling him a “first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant”.

He also pointed out that “Judge Bulsara was also the General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission where he worked to protect investors and the country’s financial markets”.

“He is an expert in securities, contract, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, but his experience also extends to representing the incarcerated, victims of domestic violence, and individuals on death row in pro bono cases,” said US Senator Schumer, who recommended Sanket Bulsara to President Biden.

“Sanket Bulsara is the epitome of the American Dream and a history maker: the child of hard-working immigrants from both India and Kenya and the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit when he was appointed as a Magistrate Judge,” Schumer added.
