Indian Americans are mobilizing efforts to urge the U.S. government to impose economic sanctions on Bangladesh in response to alleged persecution of Hindu minorities. Prominent community leaders are engaging the administration and Congress to advocate for measures that could pressure Bangladesh to address these human rights concerns.
Dr. Bharat Barai, a noted Indian American physician, expressed optimism that Donald Trump’s potential leadership would take a decisive stance. Barai highlighted Trump’s recent statements condemning violence against Hindus, Christians, and other minorities in Bangladesh as a promising sign of support.
“Trump has boldly acknowledged the persecution of Bangladeshi Hindus and the desecration of temples,” Barai remarked during an interview. He suggested that economic sanctions, particularly targeting Bangladesh’s garment exports, could be a potent strategy if the situation remains unchanged. “If their garment industry, which constitutes 80% of their economy, collapses, the consequences would be significant,” he added.
Barai alleged external interference in destabilizing Bangladesh’s democracy, implicating figures like George Soros and Peter Omidyar in an agenda to undermine India’s leadership. He also referenced the riots during Trump’s 2020 visit to India, calling them engineered distractions.
Barai criticized Bangladesh’s caretaker government under Muhammad Yunus, claiming that the military exerts real control over the nation. He voiced hope that international pressure could lead to systemic changes to protect minorities.
During the annual Diwali celebrations at the U.S. Capitol, attended by over two dozen lawmakers and Indian Americans, Barai reiterated the community’s commitment to engage with Congress and the incoming administration. He also urged the Indian government to take a firmer stance, suggesting sanctions from India if persecution continues.
In a statement before the U.S. general elections, Trump condemned the violence in Bangladesh and pledged to champion the rights of Hindu Americans. “We will fight for your freedom and protect against the radical left’s anti-religion agenda,” Trump asserted, emphasizing a vision of “peace through strength.”
