Indian portrait artist Sheffy Tattarath has once again paid homage to Oman’s rich heritage and leadership with a stunning watercolor portrait of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, created to commemorate the nation’s 54th National Day. Renowned for his dedication to capturing the essence of Omani leaders, Sheffy sees his artistic tributes as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to a country he considers home, reported muscatdaily.com.

“For me, a leader’s personality shines through their unique mannerisms,” explains Sheffy. “His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik exudes a gentle charisma, and his eyes, in particular, reveal his thoughtful demeanor. Painting his portrait is a meticulous process where every brushstroke must honor his true essence.”

Decades of Dedication

Having lived in Oman for several decades, Sheffy’s work reflects his deep connection to the country. His portfolio spans not only royal portraits but also depictions of Omani landscapes, cultural heritage, and everyday life. Beyond royalty, he often gifts personalized portraits to friends and acquaintances as a token of his appreciation.

Sheffy’s love for exploring diverse artistic mediums is evident in his works. “I have portrayed His Majesty using oil, acrylic, pencil, pen and ink, and even conte crayon. Each medium offers a unique way to bring out the character of my subject,” he shares. He is currently working on a pastel portrait of His Majesty, adding another masterpiece to his extensive collection.

For Sheffy, each portrait is more than a work of art—it is a celebration of a leader who embodies the spirit of a nation

The Art of Precision

Sheffy believes the true challenge in portraiture lies in capturing not just physical likeness but the inner character. “A slight deviation in facial features can alter the entire personality of the portrait,” he explains. He dedicates extra care to details like His Majesty’s eyes and lips, which he says convey much of his expression.

While some artists consider the eyes the most difficult part to depict, Sheffy asserts that all facial features are equally significant. “A portrait of someone wearing sunglasses shifts the focus from the eyes, while a face mask emphasizes other features,” he notes, highlighting the nuanced balance required in his craft.

A Dream Yet to Realize

Although Sheffy has created countless portraits of His Majesty from photographs, he dreams of a live portrait session. “Live sketches bring a unique vibrancy, but they come with time constraints and challenges, especially for a leader of such stature,” he says. Despite these limitations, Sheffy remains confident in his ability to create a compelling live portrait within an hour.
