In a startling turn of events, Abu Dhabi has been rocked by reports of a 38-year-old Indian expatriate allegedly absconding after embezzling a substantial sum of cash from the renowned LuLu hypermarket chain. Mohammed Niazi, originally from Kerala, India, had been entrusted with the responsibilities of managing the cash office at the LuLu hypermarket located in Khalidiya Mall, Abu Dhabi.

The incident came to light when the LuLu Group International lodged a complaint with both Abu Dhabi and Kerala police against Niazi, who had been an integral part of the company for a span of 15 years.

According to local media sources, suspicions arose when Niazi failed to report to work on Monday, March 25, prompting an internal investigation by the hypermarket authorities. It was during this investigation that a significant shortfall of over Dirhams 600,000 (Rs 1,49,83,830) from the cash office was discovered, leading to the shocking revelation of Niazi’s alleged involvement.

As investigations unfold, the case of Mohammed Niazi serves as a cautionary tale, prompting reflection on the complexities of employee management and the imperative for robust security protocols in safeguarding against financial malfeasance in the corporate realm

Efforts by Niazi’s colleagues to establish contact with him were futile as his phone was found switched off. Adding to the intrigue, his family abruptly left their residence without informing anyone. Compounding matters further, Niazi’s passport, essential for international travel, was reportedly kept under the custody of the company as a standard procedure for employees working in sensitive positions such as the cash office, effectively preventing his potential escape from the country.

The LuLu Group, founded by 68-year-old Indian businessman M A Yusuff Ali, has been a cornerstone of the retail landscape in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since the launch of its first hypermarket in 1995. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, the group has garnered widespread acclaim for its expansive network of shopping malls and hypermarkets, catering to diverse communities across the Gulf region.

With a global footprint spanning 26 countries, including the Middle East, Asia, the US, and Europe, the LuLu Group has emerged as a major employer, with a workforce exceeding 70,000 individuals. However, the recent incident involving Niazi underscores the challenges faced by businesses in safeguarding against internal breaches of trust, highlighting the importance of stringent oversight measures in maintaining financial integrity and accountability within organizations.
