Indian expat population in GCC countries surpasses 9 million

  • Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed the Indian parliament that as of June 30 this year, 180,000 Indians have been granted immigration clearance. In contrast, 398,000 people received clearance during the previous year

The Indian expatriate community in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries has exceeded 9 million, as stated by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in Parliament. Indians are employed across a wide array of sectors in the region, including IT, engineering, banking, fintech, healthcare, and domestic work.

  • Immigration clearance is mandatory for individuals with educational qualifications below the 10th standard and for those seeking employment in specific sectors, including nursing.

Among the GCC countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosts the largest number of Indian nationals, totaling 3.55 million. Saudi Arabia follows with 2.6 million Indians, while Kuwait ranks third with over 1.1 million. Other GCC nations include Oman with 779,000 Indians, Qatar with 745,000, and Bahrain with 323,000. Additionally, India leads in the number of ultra-wealthy individuals residing in the Gulf.
