This arrest highlights Nepal’s increasing vigilance against cybercrimes, emphasizing the region’s commitment to combating online fraud and protecting its citizens from similar schemes
Nepalese authorities have arrested a 30-year-old Indian national, Rajiv Mahanandan, for allegedly orchestrating an online fraud scheme that swindled multiple victims, theprint.in reported.
Originally from Orissa, India, Mahanandan had recently taken up residence in Haldibari Rural Municipality in Nepal’s Jhapa district.
Law enforcement officials are pursuing further inquiries to determine the extent of Mahanandan’s fraudulent activities and to identify any additional accomplices
According to a statement from Nepal Police, Mahanandan deceived several individuals through WhatsApp, promising valuable items such as gold jewelry and iPhones in exchange for online payments. He allegedly instructed his victims to transfer funds into his bank account, collecting over NPR 1.78 million (approximately INR 11.1 lakh) under false pretenses. Despite the payments made, none of the promised items were delivered.
The Crime Investigation Office in Kathmandu launched an investigation after receiving complaints. They tracked Mahanandan’s activities and, on October 30, apprehended him in Belbari Municipality, located in Nepal’s Morang district.
