A senior Indian government official has arrived in Nepal to review preparations for the upcoming national elections and assess the progress of India-funded development initiatives. Munu Mahawar, Additional Secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, will spend four days in Nepal engaging in a series of high-level discussions, according to local foreign ministry sources.

During his visit, Mahawar is scheduled to meet with top Nepalese leaders, including Prime Minister Sushila Karki, Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal, Commerce Minister Anil Kumar Sinha, and Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. The discussions are expected to focus on India’s support for the March 5 elections, as well as broader cooperation between the two countries.

Mahawar will also hold talks with Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, highlighting the continued diplomatic engagement between Kathmandu and New Delhi.

  • Beyond the capital, the official will visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, for an official event, underlining the cultural and historical ties shared by the neighboring nations
  • Additionally, he will inspect the integrated check post in Bhairahawa, which has been constructed with India’s assistance, demonstrating ongoing infrastructure collaboration

This visit marks the highest-level Indian delegation to Nepal since the political unrest in September, known as the Gen Z uprising, which resulted in the resignation of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. Analysts view Mahawar’s trip as a signal of India’s continued engagement in Nepal’s political and developmental affairs, particularly as the nation prepares for a crucial electoral process.

Officials say that Mahawar’s visit underscores India’s commitment to supporting Nepal’s democratic institutions while monitoring the progress of bilateral development projects, ranging from infrastructure to trade facilitation. His interactions are expected to strengthen coordination between the two governments and ensure that India-funded initiatives are implemented effectively.
