Rishi David Ramesh Nandwani, a 27-year-old Indian origin man, has been sentenced to four weeks in jail and fined SGD 4,000 for using racial slurs and endangering safety in a café incident at Singapore’s Holland Village. The case highlights the serious repercussions of abusive behavior in public spaces , reported republicworld.com.

Rishi Nandwani Pleads Guilty to Offenses Committed in Crowded Café

The incident occurred on October 31 at a busy café with families and children present. Mistakenly believing he was in the correct queue, Nandwani tried to place an order but was informed by the cashier to wait in line. This sparked his outrage, leading to a two-minute tirade involving racial slurs against Chinese people and vulgarities, during which he declared he was “sick of this country.”

The cashier stepped away, distressed by his insults, but Nandwani escalated his actions by throwing a tip box that struck her lower back. He later returned to throw serving trays, though they missed her. Videos of the altercation show stunned customers witnessing the outburst in silence.

Court Recognizes Need to Protect Service Workers from Abuse

District Judge Janet Wang emphasized the public disturbance caused by Nandwani’s actions. She underlined the law’s role in safeguarding service staff from such abuse, noting that his behavior endangered the victim’s safety and caused distress. Nandwani, appearing via video link from remand, pleaded guilty to two charges, with two additional charges considered during sentencing.

Seriousness of Actions Highlighted

Police arrested Nandwani an hour after the incident. Videos played in court captured his disruptive behavior, which Judge Wang cited as unacceptable in a public setting. The judgment underscores Singapore’s strict stance against abusive conduct and its commitment to maintaining harmony.
