Indian-origin Member of Parliament, Murali Pillai, is set to assume the role of Minister of State for Law and Transport in Singapore’s new cabinet under incoming Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The 56-year-old politician and lawyer, a member of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), will be officially sworn in on July 1, according to The Straits Times.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who will be sworn into office on Wednesday, announced the new cabinet line-up on Monday. Among other notable Indian-origin politicians, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan will continue as Foreign Affairs Minister, K. Shanmugam will remain as Minister of Home Affairs and Law, and Indranee Rajah will stay on as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

The new cabinet announcement follows the decision of incumbent Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, 72, to step down after two decades in leadership. Lee will transition to a senior minister role within the cabinet and continue as chairman of the Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council.

Lawrence Wong, 51, emphasized the importance of continuity and stability as the government nears the end of its current term. Highlighting a blend of experienced and younger ministers, Wong aims to rotate the PAP’s fourth-generation (4G) leaders across different portfolios to broaden their exposure and experience, should the party be re-elected.

In the reshuffle, Gan Kim Yong, 65, will be promoted to Deputy Prime Minister while retaining his position as Trade and Industry Minister. He will also become the chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and oversee the strategy group within the Prime Minister’s Office. Current Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, 63, will continue in his role despite having been previously named as Lee’s successor, a position he declined.

Wong’s cabinet, largely maintaining existing leadership within various ministries, is poised to navigate the Asian financial hub through a challenging global landscape marked by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. Political analysts note the ongoing conflicts, including the Ukraine-Russia war and instability in Gaza and the Red Sea, as significant factors affecting Singapore’s strategic outlook.
