Tense exchange at University of Mississippi highlights NRI frustrations over H-1B and visa restrictions
An Indian-origin woman engaged in a pointed question-and-answer session with US Vice President JD Vance over the country’s strict immigration policies, which many NRIs say have made legal residency and work in the US increasingly difficult, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
The woman questioned Vance on who decides the number of immigrants allowed, stressing that immigrants invest their youth and wealth in the US and deserve fair treatment
During the exchange, she highlighted how immigrants contribute significantly to the nation despite facing stringent regulations, referring to Trump-era changes in the H-1B visa system and the revocation of around 6,000 international student visas.
She pressed Vance on statements suggesting that the US has “too many of them now” and that some immigrants would be forced out.
Vance reportedly responded by saying that the entry of a few illegal immigrants does not obligate the US to accept millions in the future, emphasizing that his priority is to protect the interests of current US citizens. He argued that while many aspire to move to the US, policy decisions must balance the nation’s broader interests.
