Despite holding two advanced degrees, Priya Saxena, a PhD student with a stellar academic record, placed on deportation list over minor traffic violations
Priya Saxena, a 28-year-old Indian scholar pursuing a PhD in chemical and biological engineering, is facing deportation from the United States despite earning two advanced degrees from a US institution, according to recent reports, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
Saxena holds a PhD in chemical and biological engineering and a master’s degree in chemical engineering. Despite receiving a valid visa in 2022—set to expire in 2027—she was recently informed by US immigration officials that her visa would be revoked due to minor traffic rule violations from 2021.
Saxena, who studied at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, has been placed on a deportation list by US immigration authorities for alleged traffic infractions committed in 2021.
The situation has sparked concern in academic and immigrant communities alike, as the infractions reportedly did not involve any criminal charges or serious offenses. In a recent development, US District Judge Karen Schreier granted a temporary restraining order last month, allowing Saxena to remain in the country to collect her academic degrees. The restraining order was extended until May 10.
Supporters have called the deportation proceedings against Saxena an overreach, especially given her exceptional academic credentials and the minor nature of the cited violations. Legal experts are closely watching the case, which may set a precedent for how minor offenses impact visa holders in the US.
