The tragic incident is part of an increasing number of attacks on Indian students in the US
G Praveen, a 26-year-old postgraduate student from Telangana’s Rangareddy district, was shot dead in the US. Praveen, who had moved to the US to pursue studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was working part-time at a store when the tragic incident occurred, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
Praveen’s family is left in shock as the authorities investigate the circumstances of his death.
The shooting took place on Wednesday morning, and US authorities informed Praveen’s family shortly after. His father, Raghavulu, recounted how he missed a WhatsApp call at 5 am and, upon discovering the missed call, became worried when he didn’t get a response after sending a voice message.
It was then that Praveen’s friends informed him that his son had been shot during a robbery at the store where he worked part-time. His cousin, Arun, stated that Praveen had been shot multiple times, though the exact details of the incident remain unclear. US authorities have confirmed that the exact cause of death will be revealed after the post-mortem.
Praveen had completed his B Tech in Hyderabad before moving to the US in 2023 for his master’s degree. The Indian Consulate in Chicago expressed their condolences, stating that they are in contact with Praveen’s family and the university to provide all necessary support during this difficult time.
This marks the third such incident in five months, raising concerns over the safety of Indian students in the US.
This tragic event is the third in a series of incidents where Indian students have been killed in the US within the past five months. In November 2024, a student from Khammam district was shot dead, and another student from Hyderabad was killed in January 2025.
