The automatic crash detection feature in smartwatches has emerged as a critical tool in emergencies, potentially saving lives by expediting response times
A US-based Indian entrepreneur recently highlighted the lifesaving capabilities of modern technology after surviving a highway crash in California, gujaratsamachar.com reported.
Kuldeep Dhankar, a senior executive at the San Francisco-based software engineering firm Last9, experienced a collision on Interstate 5 near Lathrop. He attributes their swift rescue to his smartwatch, which automatically detected the accident and contacted emergency services.
In a social media post, Dhankar shared details of the incident, recounting how his vehicle was rear-ended while stationary in traffic. “Got rear-ended by a car while we were at standstill in traffic on the I-5 yesterday. The car behind was probably a total loss. (We are perfectly safe),” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
When a user commented on how the crash did not disrupt their plans, Dhankar humorously added that his companion, Sahil, managed to locate “a great Italian restaurant in Bakersfield” and enjoyed a hearty meal of pasta
Dhankar praised his Apple Watch for its critical role in the aftermath. “Apple Watch detected that we were in a crash and auto-called 911. There was an officer on the scene within minutes. We were able to leave in 30 minutes and got to our destination safe.”
Despite the jarring experience, Dhankar and his passengers remained unharmed. Traveling in a Ford Expedition, a vehicle known for its robust build, they “shrugged the impact off.” Demonstrating compassion, Dhankar ensured the well-being of the other party involved—described as “kids, really” who were visibly shaken. The entrepreneur provided them water and waited for clearance from law enforcement before continuing his journey.
