In a major drug bust at Muscat International Airport, Oman Customs officials intercepted an Indian traveller attempting to smuggle over 5 kilograms of marijuana into the country, according to local media reports, reported gulfnews.com.

The narcotics, weighing approximately 5.3 kilograms, were reportedly hidden across multiple bags, camouflaged within the passenger’s personal belongings — a method that points to considerable planning and effort to evade detection.

Oman Customs confirmed that its officers acted on prior intelligence and maintained surveillance at the airport, leading to the successful seizure and arrest

The agency released a brief statement saying, “Our officers remain alert to all attempts to smuggle narcotics and illegal substances into the Sultanate. This operation reflects our firm stance in protecting national security.”

Heightened Vigilance at Gulf Entry Points

This seizure underscores the increasing sophistication of drug smuggling operations and the constant pressure on Gulf authorities to tighten border security.

The seized marijuana has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further examination. Meanwhile, the Indian suspect has been transferred to the public prosecution office to face legal proceedings under Oman’s strict anti-drug laws.

Oman’s Ongoing Crackdown

Oman continues to maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking. Authorities have stepped up monitoring efforts at all entry points, including airports and seaports, to prevent the inflow of illegal substances.
