Fire alarm reportedly triggered by shower steam, leading to an emergency response and an unexpected A$1,800 charge
An Indian woman living in Australia has reportedly faced a charge of A$1,800, equivalent to around ₹1.30 lakh, after a fire alarm went off shortly after she took a five-minute shower.
The woman, identified online as Vamika and known by the Instagram username @sorandomvamika, shared her account of the incident on social media. The video has since attracted widespread attention and prompted discussion about fire alarm systems and emergency response charges.
According to her account, she had just stepped out of the shower when the building’s fire alarm suddenly began ringing. Initially, she thought the alarm might have been part of a fire drill.
A building manager then entered her apartment to investigate. She said she initially assumed he had come to assist with an evacuation, but soon realised he was responding to the alarm.
The incident has sparked debate online, with users questioning whether the alarm was overly sensitive and whether the building’s fire safety arrangements should be inspected
The woman said the manager discovered that she had been showering. She had spent about five minutes in the bathroom and had not switched on the exhaust fan because she finds it uncomfortable when cold air enters after a shower.
She believed that the resulting steam may have reached the fire alarm and triggered it. She also questioned why the alarm had been installed close to the bathroom.
The alarm reportedly resulted in a fire brigade response, after which she said she was told she would have to pay A$1,800. Brut noted that she referred elsewhere to a figure of about A$1,900 including taxes, while Indian media reports have generally converted the reported charge to around ₹1.30 lakh.
However, the technical cause of the alarm and the exact basis of the charge have not been independently verified. Steam can affect some smoke-detection systems, but the available reports do not establish that it was definitively responsible in this case.
