Stranded in Germany, she contrasts her Indian passport woes with American perks
Anisha Arora, an Indian woman based in New York City, has sparked conversation online after posting a viral Instagram video highlighting the limitations of holding an Indian passport. The video, filmed from a cramped airport hotel room in Germany, humorously but pointedly contrasts her experience with that of American travelers after a missed connecting flight, reported hindustantimes.com.
Arora’s ordeal began when a delay caused her to miss a connecting flight in Frankfurt. While American passengers were accommodated with five-star hotel stays, full meals, and the freedom to explore Germany during the 20-hour layover, Arora—who lacks a Schengen visa—was confined to a small capsule room provided by the airline.
“I never really cared about my passport until now,” she said, panning her phone camera to reveal the tiny room. “So while other passengers are getting free stays at five-star hotels and free breakfast and dinners, I am stuck in this stupid capsule.”
The issue wasn’t just accommodation—it was mobility. American passport holders were able to leave the airport and explore the country. Arora, restricted by visa limitations, had to remain inside. “Any other US citizen in my position would have been so happy… but not me because I have an Indian passport,” she added.
India ranks 82nd on the Henley Passport Index, significantly lower than the United States, which stands at the 10th position, a disparity that underscores differences in global mobility and access.
The video has resonated widely, triggering discussions about travel inequality, visa access, and the emotional toll of limited passport privileges.
