US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, emphasized the deep-rooted connection between nations through the Indian diaspora during his keynote address at the Indiaspora G20 forum. In his speech, he highlighted that US President Joe Biden had underlined the significance of India on the global stage.
Garcetti shared his personal aspiration of being in India, expressing his initial desire to reside in Bodh Gaya and pursue a Buddhist studies program. However, his path took a different turn due to his engagement in student politics. Despite this, destiny took a unique course, and he found himself living his Indian dream after President Biden invited him to serve as the US Ambassador to India.
Recalling a conversation with President Biden, Garcetti recounted that the President had expressed a sentiment that no previous American leader had conveyed. President Biden had stated that India held unparalleled importance to him, a sentiment he had also expressed to other heads of state during official visits.
Garcetti stressed the value of being at ease with traversing borders and moving between different cultures, describing it as a fundamental life skill. He articulated that individuals are shaped by a multitude of identities, forming a network of concentric circles that collectively define them
Emphasizing the vital role of the Indian diaspora, Garcetti noted that while comprising only 1% of the American population, the 4 million members of the Indian diaspora contribute a substantial 6% of the country’s tax base. Furthermore, he pointed out that they hold prominent positions, accounting for 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs.
