Trusted domestic help arrested; 70% of antique loot recovered, say Kolkata Police
Kolkata: In a shocking incident, valuable antique and ancestral jewellery worth around ₹1 crore was stolen from a central Kolkata home belonging to an NRI family, prompting swift police action that led to the arrest of the family’s long-time domestic help and detention of her daughter, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
The theft came to light on July 26 when Bithika Nandi (85), a resident of the family’s ancestral house on Marcus Square, discovered several priceless heirlooms and cash missing. The FIR was lodged by Tito Tarafdar (66) of Biplabi Anukul Chandra Street, a family member whose relatives are largely settled abroad.
The stolen items included:
- A rare diamond necklace
- A pair of diamond earrings
- Two diamond bracelets
- Three pairs of gold earrings with diamond studs
- ₹1.17 lakh in cash

The family, reputed for their musical instrument store in Lalbazar, also owns several properties in Kolkata.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, police arrested Nikhat Parveen alias Rani (55) — a domestic worker employed for over 15 years — and detained her daughter Baby Begum alias Mamata (30)

During interrogation, Rani confessed to having sold part of the stolen jewellery. “We have recovered approximately 70% of the antique jewellery. Some of it was originally purchased in England by the victim’s forefathers,” a senior officer said.
The probe is ongoing to recover the remaining stolen property and investigate any other accomplices.
