Karnataka is gearing up to mark the International Day of Democracy on September 15 in a truly remarkable fashion. The state is inviting hundreds of thousands of children and citizens at large to come together for a momentous event where they will collectively read the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. Organized by the state’s Social Welfare Department, this celebration extends an open invitation to the Indian diaspora, emphasizing the shared ideals that have granted freedom to the world’s oldest and largest democracies, India and the United States.
Since 2007, September 15 has been recognized as the International Day of Democracy, a day designated by the United Nations General Assembly to honor civil liberties and political rights worldwide. This year, the state of Karnataka is taking a bold step to reaffirm its dedication to these cherished principles through this historic gathering.
On this momentous occasion, children and citizens from across Karnataka will come together to read the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The Preamble, the cornerstone of our nation, is built upon the principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
This initiative by the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Karnataka signifies a collective commitment to the ideals that have bound our nation since its inception. It also aims to raise awareness about the fundamental principles that guide our nation’s destiny.
This event also offers online participation. On September 15, participants can upload videos or pictures of themselves reading The Preamble. Upon verification, participants will receive downloadable participation certificates from the event’s official website
This celebration holds a unique significance for Americans of Indian origin, as they have played a pivotal role in upholding democratic values in the United States for generations. Ravi Boregowda, a first-generation Indian American and a leader in the diaspora Kannadiga community, expressed, “Even though we, as expats, are thousands of miles away from our homeland, it is our shared democratic values with the United States that keep us connected to India.”
“Many of us have family members in India, and we proudly celebrate our traditions in the US. However, our deep connection to our motherland is rooted in our collective belief in equality, freedom, and justice,” he added.
The Indian diaspora in the United States is cordially invited to register for this event and participate in reading the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. This event promises to be a remarkable bridge between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy.
Dr. H. C. Mahadevappa, Karnataka’s Social Welfare Minister, remarked, “The commitment of the Indian and American people to democratic values has become an example and a beacon of hope for people across the world.”
On September 15, 2023, at 10:00 am, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Minister Mahadevappa, and other distinguished guests, accompanied by 10,000 children, will assemble on the grand steps of Vidhan Soudha, Bengaluru, to read The Preamble of the Constitution.
This event also offers online participation. On September 15, participants can upload videos or pictures of themselves reading The Preamble. Upon verification, participants will receive downloadable participation certificates from the event’s official website.
We encourage companies, MSMEs, NGOs, RWAs, and individual families to register and join us in reading The Preamble of the Indian Constitution on the International Day of Democracy. Together, let us celebrate the democratic values that bind our nations and inspire the world.
