Ensuring their safety during periods of geopolitical tension remains a key diplomatic priority for New Delhi
India’s government says it is closely monitoring the safety of its citizens in West Asia as geopolitical tensions escalate in the region.
Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the welfare of Indian nationals living in Gulf and West Asian countries remains a top priority, given the region’s large Indian expatriate population.
According to the ministry, two Indian nationals have died and another remains missing following attacks on merchant vessels in regional waters.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the government is maintaining constant communication with authorities across the region to safeguard Indian citizens
“The welfare of the large Indian diaspora in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries remains a top priority,” he said.
India’s diplomatic missions across the region have activated 24-hour control rooms and emergency helplines to assist citizens and respond to concerns from families.
Officials say dozens of inquiries are being received daily from relatives seeking information about loved ones living or working in the region.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has also been in contact with counterparts in several countries, including Iran, to assess the evolving situation.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held discussions with leaders from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
Indian embassies and consulates are issuing advisories, coordinating with community groups and helping citizens who may need assistance due to travel disruptions or security concerns.
In some cases, stranded travellers affected by temporary airspace closures have been assisted by regional governments. Authorities say commercial flights are gradually resuming in several locations.
Particular attention is also being given to Indian nationals living in Iran, where approximately 9,000 Indian citizens—many of them students—are currently residing.
The Indian embassy in Tehran is assisting those who wish to relocate to safer areas or leave the country through neighboring nations if necessary.
Officials say the government remains prepared to take further measures should the security situation deteriorate.
India has one of the world’s largest overseas populations, with millions of citizens living and working across the Gulf region.
