In a significant development, the Jalandhar (rural) police apprehended Gurwinder Singh, a non-resident Indian (NRI), upon his arrival from Canada at Delhi’s international airport. The arrest was made based on charges of subjecting his wife, Deepika Rani Chahal, to cruelty for dowry, criminal breach of trust, and criminal intimidation, according to a report by the Times of India.

Gurwinder’s wife, Deepika, had filed a First Information Report (FIR) against him a year ago, prompting the issuance of a lookout circular against the accused. As Gurwinder disembarked at the Delhi airport on Wednesday, the Jalandhar police were alerted by the authorities, leading to his subsequent arrest.

In her police complaint, Deepika disclosed that her parents had expended approximately Rs 25 lakh, including dowry items, for her marriage in December 2019. Subsequently, tensions arose between the couple. Deepika managed to navigate through the challenges, but upon Gurwinder’s return to Canada in April 2020, he initiated the visa application process for her and began insisting on Rs 30 lakh.

Deepika stated, “I informed him that my family could not meet the demand, but he persisted. When I could not comply, he withdrew my visa application, despite having undergone medical examination and having my biometrics registered.” The police registered the case in January of the previous year under Sections 406, 498A, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
