The Nuclear Company has appointed Jhansi Kandasamy as its new Vice President of Regulatory and External Affairs, bringing her extensive expertise to the company’s mission of addressing America’s increasing energy demands, reported connectedtoindia.com.

Kandasamy, an influential figure in the nuclear industry, has long championed the advancement of women in nuclear roles through her leadership in organizations like US Women in Nuclear and Women in Nuclear Global.

In her previous role as the executive director of Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Net-Zero program, Kandasamy led a significant initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2031. Her accomplishments included overseeing the deployment of the first electric motor coach at a federal facility—a project that earned the 2024 US Department of Energy Sustainability Award.

  • In addition to her role at The Nuclear Company, Kandasamy remains a proactive leader in nuclear workforce diversity

  • She serves on the board of Women in Nuclear Global, co-founded the Nuclear Executives of Tomorrow (NEXT) program, and created VIEW (Vision for Inclusive Engineering Workforce) to bridge the diversity gap in engineering fields.

Kandasamy is also the managing director of Sri Nagalakshmi Ammal College of Sciences in southern India, offering low-cost education to underprivileged students in rural areas.

Her work at INL also involved collaboration with key stakeholders, such as the US Department of Energy, Nuclear Energy Institute, Electric Power Research Institute, and several reactor development companies, to create a nuclear roadmap tailored to INL’s goals.

The Nuclear Company, launched in July, aims to address the rapid growth in energy needs driven by advances in AI, increased manufacturing within the United States, and expanding electrification.

The International Energy Agency anticipates a 30% rise in global electricity demand by 2030, equivalent to the energy needs of both the U.S. and the European Union combined.

Despite nuclear energy’s potential to provide reliable, zero-carbon power, the industry faces obstacles like high costs and frequent project delays. The Nuclear Company plans to overcome these issues by adopting a “design-once, build-many” fleet model, which leverages proven technology and a collaborative Industry Working Group comprising utilities, nuclear suppliers, and private equity to streamline costs and reduce delays.
