In a move reflective of its commitment to its diaspora, Karnataka’s Home Minister, G Parameshwara, revealed plans to establish a dedicated ministry aimed at addressing the needs and concerns of NRI Kannadigas. The announcement, made during a session of the legislative assembly on February 21, underscores the state government’s proactive approach to catering to the requirements of its citizens living abroad.

Parameshwara highlighted the success of Kerala’s separate NRI Ministry, emphasizing the need for Karnataka to follow suit. He stressed the importance of such a ministry in providing support to NRI Kannadigas, particularly in matters like repatriation in the event of deaths abroad. This initiative aligns with the Congress party’s manifesto promise, signaling a concrete step towards fulfilling electoral commitments.

“As promised in our manifesto, we will create a ministry for NRIs similar to Kerala. It will cater to various needs, including addressing concerns related to deaths abroad and facilitating financial transactions,” Parameshwara affirmed.

Karnataka’s decision to create a specialized ministry for NRI Kannadigas reflects a strategic move towards strengthening ties with its diaspora. By providing dedicated support and services, the state government aims to empower NRIs and facilitate their continued engagement in Karnataka’s socio-economic progress.

The minister, who chaired the Congress Manifesto Committee for the 2023 assembly polls, reiterated the government’s dedication to addressing the challenges faced by NRIs. He acknowledged the valuable contributions NRIs make to Karnataka’s development, noting their willingness to invest in the state and allocate CSR funds from their businesses towards community welfare projects.

The establishment of an NRI Ministry represents a continuation of Karnataka’s efforts to engage with its overseas community. Parameshwara highlighted the creation of an NRI Forum in 2008, aimed at addressing NRIs’ concerns, as evidence of the state’s proactive stance. Moreover, the appointment of Dr. Arathi Krishna as Deputy Chairman of the forum underscores the government’s commitment to effective representation and advocacy for NRIs.
