The Indian state of Kerala came out with a plan to rehabilitate expatriates who had to come back to the state due to Covid-19 situation. The affected are mainly who lost their jobs or faced closure of businesses.
This was announced by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly on Wednesday. The Government, according to his statement, had finalised a Rs 2,000-crore proposal to rehabilitate the NRIs from Kerala who were forced to return due to the pandemic.
“So far, 1.33 lakh returnees received government aid of Rs 5,000 each and medical assistance up to Rs 10,000.”
The Hindu quoted statement of the Chief Minister, who said, “12.5 lakh Keralites had returned home from abroad during the Covid-19 shutdown. The Government had earmarked Rs 50 crore in its budget for expatriate rehabilitation. The administration is also willing to give them a leg-up to find self-employment or start private ventures.”
So far, 1.33 lakh returnees received government aid of Rs 5,000 each and medical assistance up to Rs 10,000, the report said.
