The finding challenges the stereotype of Malayalis as heavy drinkers, highlighting that Kerala’s actual spending on alcohol and tobacco is notably restrained
Contrary to the popular belief that alcohol consumption is a significant part of festive celebrations in Kerala, recent findings show a different picture. A survey report from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2022-2023 has revealed that Kerala ranks second among Indian states in terms of the least amount of money spent on liquor.
-
Andaman and Nicobar Islands (9.08%) and Arunachal Pradesh (6.51%) have the highest spending on alcohol in rural regions
The survey indicates that an average household in Kerala allocates minimal expenditure to alcohol and tobacco. In rural Kerala, only 1.88% of total household spending goes towards these items, while in urban areas, the figure is even lower at 1.37%. This is significantly below the national average, which stands at 3.70% in rural areas and 2.41% in urban areas.
Comparatively, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (9.08%) and Arunachal Pradesh (6.51%) have the highest spending on alcohol in rural regions. Conversely, Goa spends the least on intoxicants in rural areas (1.52%), and Maharashtra leads in urban areas with the lowest expenditure at 1.14%.
