In January 2002, a High-Level Committee on Indian Diaspora, chaired by LM Singhvi, recommended strengthening the connection between India and its overseas citizens. It suggested the creation of the Pravasi Bharatiya Bhavan to serve as a focal point for networking and recognizing the Indian diaspora’s contributions. This led to the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2003.
