The Union Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced a budget of Rs 255 crore for Kushinagar International Airport. This was in preparation for flights from the airport from October. According to the airport director, the funds will be used to complete the work at the airport. The runway, terminal building, ATC, fire, electricity substation and optical fibre work have been completed. ILS (Instrument Landing System) and DVOR (Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range) have to be installed, and the demand for installation of ILS has been sent, the airport director told newspersons.
In June this year, the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister gave its approval for declaration of Kushinagar Airport in Uttar Pradesh as an International Airport.
The airport is located in the vicinity of several Buddhist Cultural Sites like Sravasti, Kapilvastu, Lumbini (Kushinagar itself is a Buddhist cultural site) and its declaration as an ‘International Airport’ will offer improved connectivity, wider choice of competitive costs to the air travellers
Kushinagar is located in the north-eastern part of Uttar Pradesh about 50 km east of Gorakhpur and is one of the important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The airport is located in the vicinity of several Buddhist Cultural Sites like Sravasti, Kapilvastu, Lumbini (Kushinagar itself is a Buddhist cultural site) and its declaration as an “International Airport” will offer improved connectivity, wider choice of competitive costs to the air travellers. It will result in boosting of domestic/international tourism and economic development of the regions.
