As the troupe prepare for their next challenge in Tokyo, the Leelangika troupe is excited to continue their journey of artistic expression and cultural exchange on a global stage.
Jhumpa Chakraborty, the Director of the esteemed Kathak dance academy Leelangika, along with her talented young dancers Aditi Guru, Aviva Shibu, Maheeka Mahanta, Manvi Shanker, and Rupsa Mandal, are gearing up to showcase their skills at the Tokyo International Dance Festival and Competition. Scheduled for August 11th and 12th, 2024, this prestigious event, organized by the International Dance Council’s Tokyo section, brings together dancers from across the globe to celebrate the universal message of World Peace—an ethos strongly supported by UNESCO.
Leelangika has previously made a mark on the international dance scene. Under Jhumpa’s guidance, the troupe has performed at the India International Dance Festival in Bhubaneswar (2015) and the Bharath Nrityotsav in Vishakhapatnam (2016), where Jhumpa was honored with the title of ‘Natya Saradhi.’ Their impressive resume also includes performances at the 50th World Dance Congress in Athens, Greece (2017), where they earned multiple accolades, and at the Dance World Cup 2018 in Mont Tremblant, Canada.
More recently, in 2022, Jhumpa and her students triumphed at the Barcelona Dance Awards, winning first prize in the Ethnic Dance Category and receiving a special choreography award from the Catalunya Theatre Jury. Their journey continued with a performance at the 60th World Dance Congress at the Dora Stratou Theatre in Athens in July 2023, followed by another successful appearance at the India International Dance Festival in Bangalore.
