Ludhiana teenager burns elderly NRI to death over rent dispute

17-year-old accused arrested for setting his 80-year-old landlady on fire after a heated argument

An 80-year-old NRI woman was burnt to death in Ludhiana after a dispute over unpaid rent escalated into a horrific crime. A 17-year-old boy, the son of her tenant, allegedly pushed her onto an LPG stove, setting her ablaze when she refused to accept partial rent payment, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Teenager Confesses to Crime

  • The victim, Narinder Kaur Deol, had been residing in Raghbir Park, Jassian Road, Haibowal, for over a year. She lived on the first floor, while the accused teenager’s family rented the ground floor.
  • The tenant’s family had been struggling financially, unable to pay six months’ rent.
  • On March 23, the juvenile attempted to pay part of the outstanding Rs 50,000 rent, but Narinder Kaur refused and demanded full payment.
  • Enraged, he dragged her to the stove and set her on fire, before fleeing the scene.

Investigation and Arrest

Narinder Kaur’s daughter, Ravinder Kaur, who lives in the USA, suspected foul play and alerted the police. Following an initial investigation, police arrested the 17-year-old suspect from Chuharpur Road near Sangam Chowk. During questioning, he confessed to the crime.

Inspector Madhu Bala, SHO of Haibowal Police Station, confirmed that neighbours saw smoke and rushed to help the victim, who suffered severe burns.

She was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries on March 26. The police are examining the role of the suspect’s parents in the crime.
