Madhya Pradesh HC Orders Fresh counselling for NRI quota seat

Court directs fair distribution of NRI quota across all branches in private medical college

The Jabalpur bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has ordered the state government to conduct fresh stray/special counselling for vacant NRI quota seats in private medical colleges. The directive addresses alleged discrepancies in the allocation of NRI seats for postgraduate medical courses and calls for adherence to prescribed guidelines, reported freepressjournal.in.

Petitioner Challenges Selective Allocation of NRI Quota

The petitioner, a NEET PG 2024 qualifier, argued that the government’s decision to limit the 15% NRI quota to just 8 out of 22 branches in private medical colleges was arbitrary and illegal. This selective allocation reduced opportunities for reserved and unreserved category students, especially in non-clinical branches.

Court Calls for Equitable Seat Distribution

  • The petitioner’s counsel highlighted that restricting the NRI quota to a few branches manipulated the seat distribution in favor of NRI candidates, depriving other students of their rightful chances

  • The court acknowledged these claims, noting that the current distribution created an imbalance, particularly affecting non-clinical branches

Fresh Counselling to Ensure Fairness

The High Court instructed the state government to hold fresh counselling sessions and complete the admissions process promptly. It emphasized the need for proper and fair distribution of the NRI quota across all 22 branches to rectify the discrepancies and ensure equal opportunities for all deserving candidates.
