In a momentous ceremony on December 6, 2023, Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra and Mayor Daniel Esaú Pinto Peña unveiled the inspiring bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Livingstone, fostering a sense of unity and shared heritage among the Indian diaspora and local residents. The timeless principles embodied by Gandhi’s legacy are set to become a focal point for dialogue, bridging diverse communities in Livingstone.”

The decision to install these iconic busts across Guatemala underscores the universal appeal of Gandhi’s principles, transcending geographical boundaries. With approximately 150 Indian-origin families calling Livingstone home, the city’s unique cultural ties to India are celebrated through this symbolic installation. Beyond symbolizing shared values of peace and non-violence, the bust pays homage to the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora to the local community.

As the bust stands as a beacon of inspiration, it is expected to become a focal point for fostering dialogue and understanding between the diverse communities residing in Livingstone

The unveiling ceremony transcended cultural boundaries, emphasizing friendship and cultural exchange. Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra highlighted Gandhi’s global impact on promoting harmony, echoed by Mayor Daniel Esaú Pinto Peña, who recognized the enduring significance of Gandhi’s teachings.

This unveiling follows the earlier installation of the first Mahatma Gandhi bust at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Guatemala City, unveiled by Indian Minister of State Meenakashi Lekhi and Guatemalan Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro earlier in the year.
