Malaysia and India are taking their long-standing relationship to a new level, with a strong focus on digital cooperation, trade, education, and people-to-people ties. During his two-day official visit to Kuala Lumpur, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries and announced that India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system will soon be introduced in Malaysia.

Modi said India now accounts for nearly half of the world’s real-time digital transactions, largely due to the success of UPI. He added that the Malaysia–India Digital Council is creating new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in digital finance and technology.

The planned linkage between India’s UPI and Malaysia’s PayNet system is expected to make cross-border payments easier for businesses, students and travellers

The Indian leader also underlined India’s economic presence in Malaysia, noting that more than 100 Indian IT companies operate in the country and employ thousands of people. He referred to India-based Biocon Biologics, which runs one of Asia’s largest insulin manufacturing facilities in Johor, as an example of successful industrial cooperation.

Modi announced new scholarship schemes for Malaysian students wishing to study in India and confirmed continued support for existing scholarship funds. He also revealed that India has extended Overseas Citizenship of India eligibility to Malaysian citizens of Indian origin up to the sixth generation and plans to open a new Indian consulate in Malaysia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said both nations are strengthening cooperation in future-focused sectors such as semiconductors, digital finance, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. He added that Malaysia’s strong electronics ecosystem and India’s expanding market offer natural synergies.
