Malaysia is aiming to attract more than two million Indian tourists in 2026, signalling a strong push to tap into one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets. The target builds on steady growth in recent years, with Indian arrivals reaching around 1.56 million in 2025, reflecting rising interest in Southeast Asian travel among Indian families, honeymooners, and business travellers.

To achieve its ambitious goal, Malaysia is strengthening air connectivity with India. At present, hundreds of weekly flights connect major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru with Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. Authorities expect more services and partnerships with airlines, including low-cost carriers, to make travel easier and more affordable.

Tourism promotion is another key focus. Malaysia is highlighting its mix of modern cities, heritage sites and natural beauty to appeal to Indian travellers

From the historic streets of Melaka and George Town to the beaches of Langkawi and the vibrant shopping districts of Kuala Lumpur, the country offers a wide range of experiences. Malaysian cuisine, influenced by Malay, Chinese and Indian traditions, is also a strong attraction, especially in Penang, known for its street food culture.

Partnerships with Indian travel agencies are being expanded to design customised packages for leisure and corporate travellers. Business tourism is also growing, with Malaysia positioning itself as a regional hub for meetings and conferences. The Indian diaspora in Malaysia is helping promote tourism through cultural and personal networks, strengthening people-to-people ties.

Tourism plays a vital role in Malaysia’s economy, contributing significantly to national income and employment. With sustainability and community-based tourism gaining importance, the country is promoting eco-friendly travel and responsible tourism practices.
