Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his anti-India rhetoric during his election campaign, is now working to rebuild relations with New Delhi. On his first state visit to India, Muizzu described the country as a “valued partner,” a shift from his previous pro-China stance. This diplomatic recalibration reflects the economic and geopolitical pressures facing the Maldives, aljazeera.com reported.

Muizzu’s campaign had focused on removing Indian troops stationed in the Maldives, a move that strained ties between the two nations. Despite this, the Maldivian leader has taken steps to re-engage with India since his election in late 2023.

  • The geopolitical stakes are high, as the Maldives is strategically located on a key maritime route

  • Both China and India vie for influence in the region, and Muizzu appears to be navigating a delicate balance between these two powers

  • While his party’s “India Out” campaign found popularity at home, Muizzu has fulfilled his promise to remove Indian troops while maintaining strong economic ties with New Delhi

His recent visit to India highlights this intent, as both nations discussed cooperation in areas such as energy, trade, and defense. Notably, India pledged a $400 million currency swap to support the Maldives’ struggling economy, signaling a willingness to help address the archipelago’s foreign exchange issues.

The Maldives is grappling with a significant debt burden, with foreign reserves dwindling to $440 million. Much of its debt is owed to China, from which the Maldives borrowed heavily under former President Abdulla Yameen. Despite maintaining strong ties with China, Muizzu’s visit to India underscores the Maldives’ recognition of New Delhi as a critical economic partner. India remains a significant investor in Maldivian infrastructure and tourism, sectors that are crucial for the island nation’s recovery.
