A recent social media video featuring fugitive businessmen Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya has reignited political and public debate in India, prompting a firm response from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The video, filmed in London during celebrations marking Vijay Mallya’s 70th birthday, shows the two men jokingly referring to themselves as the “two biggest fugitives of India,” a remark that drew sharp criticism back home.

Responding to media queries, MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal underlined the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to bringing back all individuals who are wanted by Indian law and have fled abroad. He stated that the government remains firm in its efforts to ensure that such persons are returned to India to face trial. According to the MEA, discussions with multiple countries are ongoing as part of broader diplomatic and legal processes aimed at extradition and mutual legal assistance.

  • The issue has once again highlighted the challenges India faces in dealing with economic offenders who relocate overseas

  • While extradition processes often involve complex legal and diplomatic hurdles, the government has maintained that such cases remain a priority

  • Officials have emphasised that no individual is above the law and that sustained international engagement is key to ensuring accountability

The controversial video was posted on social media by Lalit Modi, the former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner, who has been residing outside India for several years. In the clip, Modi is seen standing alongside Vijay Mallya, the former liquor baron wanted in connection with alleged fraud and money laundering linked to loans taken by the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines. The caption accompanying the post appeared to mock Indian authorities and media, further fuelling public anger.

Mallya, who has been living in the United Kingdom, has long been at the centre of high-profile legal proceedings in India. Indian agencies have repeatedly stated that efforts are underway to secure his extradition. Lalit Modi is also facing multiple allegations related to financial irregularities and is wanted by Indian investigative agencies.
