Mathura: The spectacle of a monkey, perched on a heritage building’s parapet wall in the narrow alleys of Vrindavan in Mathura district, examining a police cap could bring an instant smile for its mischievousness, a report in the Deccan Chronicle, says.

On Monday, August 22, Mathura district magistrate was caught unaware by the monkeys that snatched his spectacles while he was on the phone. The incident took place in the lanes leading to the Sri Banke Behari Mandir in Vrindavan. He got back his spectacles only after the monkey was bribed with two packets of mango juice.
The menace of monkey in northern parts of India is not new.
After the issue was discussed in Parliament, Mathura municipal body nabbed 100 monkeys for the purpose of relocation, but nothing much changed on the ground.
In 2019, MP Hema Malini raised the issue of monkey menace in the Lok Sabha.
“Monkeys have started picking on humans due to deforestation. They don’t want fruits now, but samosa and fruity,” she said, suggesting the development of a Monkey Safari.
Monkey menace is quite common in many parts of India, where they snatch items from people and sometimes trespass into homes in search of food.
A video of the incident was shared on Twitter by Indian Forest Services (IFS) officer Praveen Kaswan. It shows the DM, Navneet Chahal, and several policemen gathered under a building and figuring out a way to retrieve the glasses. Some monkeys can also be spotted jumping around the building. After keeping the men on their toes for some time, the monkey finally gives back the glasses.

The clip has collected 19k views on Twitter and elicited amusing reactions from users.
The clip prompted some to share their encounter with the notorious monkeys.
A person wrote that the monkeys frequently snatch items and one should treat them with food to get them back.
Many were amused to see how several cops were tasked with retrieving the spectacles of the DM.
The DM was definitely not the only one to have fallen prey to monkey’s pranks.
