Neena Singh Makes History as First Indian-American Sikh Woman Mayor of Montgomery Township, New Jersey

Neena Singh has shattered barriers by becoming the inaugural Sikh and Indian-American woman to assume the role of Mayor in Montgomery Township, New Jersey. The momentous occasion took place on January 4 during the Montgomery Township Reorganisation Meeting, where Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman administered the oath of office.

Having resided in Montgomery for 24 years, Singh’s unanimous selection by fellow Township Committee members marks a significant milestone. Reflecting on her historic achievement, Mayor Neena Singh expressed gratitude for being sworn in by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, a trailblazer herself. Singh stated, “It’s an enormous privilege to be sworn in as the first elected Sikh woman Mayor in New Jersey and the first Indian-American woman Mayor.”

“For every young South Asian girl growing up not just in Montgomery but across New Jersey, they’re going to have a true role model to look up to.”

— Indian-American New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal

Driven by a deep sense of duty, Singh emphasized the spirit of service as her guiding force. She believes in the collective responsibility to give back, particularly in a town that mirrors America’s diversity. Singh’s key priorities for 2024 include a focus on public safety and health. With prior experience as Deputy Mayor and Township Committeewoman, Singh received her nomination from outgoing Mayor Devra Keenan and committee-woman Patricia Taylor Todd.

Before assuming the role of Mayor, Singh served as an executive officer at STAND Central NJ, a grassroots non-profit organization. Her work extended beyond engaging and educating voters, emphasizing the empowerment of individuals in the democratic process.

Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman praised Singh’s commitment to public service, highlighting her advocacy for social justice, economic opportunity, and human rights. Watson Coleman expressed confidence in Singh’s ability to bring her experience and passion to benefit the township during her term as Mayor.

In her new capacity, Singh will preside over Township Committee meetings and possess the authority to appoint subcommittees with the Committee’s consent. Additionally, she will have the power to issue proclamations related to holidays and events in the township, as well as exercise ceremonial functions.

Indian-American New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal extended congratulations to Singh through a video message, describing her as a “role model” for South Asian girls across the state. Gopal emphasized Singh’s significance, stating, “For every young South Asian girl growing up not just in Montgomery but across New Jersey, they’re going to have a true role model to look up to.”
