Bhagwant Mann, the new Punjab Chief Minister, has directed the state civil aviation department to start talks with the Centre for direct flights to the US and Canada from the international airport at Mohali, near Chandigarh. At present, only two international flights are operational from the airport: to Dubai and Sharjah.

Mann said that a large number of people from the state had settled in the US, Canada, UK, New Zealand and Australia and they needed direct connectivity with Punjab. Chairing a meeting to review the functioning of the civil aviation department, the Chief Minister said that direct flights would help the Punjabi diaspora settled abroad.

Mann also asked the department to convene a meeting with the Haryana civil aviation department for evolving a broad consensus on naming the international airport as Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh International Airport

The Chief Minister also spoke about immediately startign cargo flights from the international airport, according to an official release. That would help the agro and food processing industry in the state, Mann said, and pointed out that the move would go a long way to boost the export of food products across the globe and especially in supplementing the income of state farmers.

Mann also asked the department to convene a meeting with the Haryana civil aviation department for evolving a broad consensus on naming the international airport as Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh International Airport.
