On the evening of July 30, the Auckland Indian Association members gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre to plan and discuss the upcoming Indian Independence Day celebrations. The meeting was attended by over 60 leaders and aimed to outline the festivities that would take place on Sunday, August 13, at the Centre’s main hall.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations are being organized jointly by two major diaspora organizations: The Auckland Tamil Association and the Auckland Marathi Association. Vai Ravindran, President of the Auckland Tamil Association, and Neha Nalavade, President of the Auckland Marathi Association, presented the day’s events and activities with great enthusiasm.

The proposed programme promises to be a vibrant and engaging celebration, showcasing a diverse array of performances, including dances and patriotic songs, featuring participants from various diaspora organizations. A total of 15 captivating performances are planned, highlighting the rich cultural heritage and national pride of India.

To ensure diversity and inclusivity in the planning process for future national day celebrations, an exciting initiative has been put in place. Organisations will be invited on a rotational basis to design the programme for forthcoming years, allowing different groups to contribute their unique perspectives and talents to the festivities, recognizing the richness of the Indian diaspora community in Auckland.
